I’ve written several articles here on this blog that define problems associated with the health of Americans today. Three of these articles can be found here. It seems that technocrats may be part of the reason Americans are not as healthy as we should be.
Dr. David Perlmutter has written several books, his first is called Grain Brain. His second, which I just received in today’s mail is called, Brain Maker. I won’t take the time to rehash all the reasons why so many people throughout America, but between these two books by Dr. Perlmutter, as well as “Wheat Belly” by Dr. Williams Davis, and numerous other actual medical doctors, the problem is clearly due to the fact that most of the food we eat (or drink) is laden with two ingredients our bodies have an extremely difficult time digesting:
- wheat (gluten)
- high fructose corn syrup
I challenge you to go to a store and begin seriously looking at all food and drink labels. You will very likely see “wheat” and/or “high fructose corn syrup” (or HFCS) as the top two ingredients. You might see “corn syrup,” which is not far removed from HFCS.
What we learn is that wheat was genetically modified in the lab during the 1960s into what is known as “dwarf wheat.” Dwarf wheat was created because food companies wanted to find a way to grow a high-yield wheat that would service the growing food industry in America. Cheaply grown, high-yield wheat was needed by corporations.
The problem is that during the modification of wheat, the gluten protein changed drastically into a type of gluten that our bodies cannot break down. Many people have gluten sensitivities and don’t even know it. Others have Celiac disease, which means if they continue to eat wheat (gluten), they will begin experiencing severe problems in their bodies and will die an early death. Obesity is also part of the major problem where wheat/gluten is concerned.
But as if that is not enough, HFCS is in nearly everything, including many of the drinks people drink today. It wasn’t that way when I was a kid. Sugar Cane was used in sodas and many products. Over the years, the food industry wanted to find a cheaper sugar substitute so HFCS was invented in the lab, from corn husks. This happened shortly after or during the same time as the federal government began subsidizing farmers for growing corn.
The sugar industry will tell you (via commercials, brochures, etc., that HFCS is treated exactly the same way in our bodies as sugar cane or sugar. They’re lying and I’ve pointed that out in previous articles, based on information written by Drs. Perlmutter, Davis, Harmon and many others.
HFCS can cause “leaky gut” syndrome. Unlike sugar cane, which is a tightly bound molecule, requiring the body to work to break it down to digest it, HFCS is not bound together by anything. When we eat/drink products with HFCS in it, it immediately goes into our bloodstream. In fact, HFCS can actually create tiny holes in the guy lining, which then allows not only HFCS molecules out of our stomach and into our blood, but bacteria from our stomach into our blood stream. This causes the liver and kidneys to work that much harder to keep our systems clean. Unfortunately, they cannot keep up with it because we were not made to ingest these types of ingredients, which essentially become toxins to our human bodies.
Yet, we keep eating. Why? Because foods today are relatively cheap and taste good. Why? Because of all the ingredients, preservatives, starches, and other crap that is added to our food and drink. The food industry has trained us to salivate after these cheap, processed foods.
I began drinking only sodas sweetened with sugar cane about two months ago. They tasted a bit “off” because they were not as sweet as sodas produced with HFCS. After a short while, I began to appreciate the taste of these “throw back” sodas.
By the way, today’s wheat, along with HFCS – unlike sugar cane – has no way of indicating to our bodies when we are full. There is no trigger. People just keep eating and drinking and even though they’re full, there is no “feeling” or “sense” that they are full, so they’ll eat and eat until they feel like puking.
You might be interested to know that table sugar (that white processed sweetener) is largely made today from genetically modified beets. There is a shortage (and has been) for actual sugar, so beets has been called on as a substitute. So even if a food or drink label says “sugar,” it might be made from beets, which is technically mislabeling the product. It should say “sugar made from beets,” not just “sugar.” If it doesn’t say “sugar cane,” I don’t purchase it.
Two months ago, I determined to avoid all wheat and products with HFCS, not an easy thing to do. We rarely eat out anymore and we shop at whole food type of places (but you must STILL read labels!). I also began following Dr. Perlmutter’s recommended daily supplement list.
It can take up to three months to notice any real improvement and I began noticing a difference about a month and a half into it. It’s now over two months and I am feeling even better.
For the longest time, I was tipping the scales at 255 (I’m 5′ 7″), obese! I had the hardest time losing weight. I began jogging every day and I drank more water. But since I was still eating food with wheat and HFCS, I was getting frustrating. This was months ago.
I now weigh 214 and I want to get down to just below 190. It’s doable. I have also noticed my blood pressure has returned to a normal range and I’ve been able to eliminate two blood pressure medications. For the longest time, my blood pressure was extremely difficult for my doctors to get control over.
It is very simple to me now. Big Food produces cheap, crappy food that gives us more health problems than we had before the 1960s. Instead of dialing things back, they simply watch as we go to the doctor, most of which prescribe heavy-duty prescription meds to us that deal with things like:
- Fatigue (ongoing)
- High blood pressure
- Foggy head/lack of ability to think clearly
- and much more
In other words, Big Food is feeding us toxins and Big Pharma is only treating symptoms. If we eliminated the crappy food from our diets, doesn’t it stand to reason that we would go to the doctors less, take fewer medications, and feel better because we were actually healthier?
By the way, I’m not saying that the food industry didn’t make these modifications to our food in order to kills us. However, it has become patently clear to many medical professionals that today’s food is doing just that. But since the food industry represents a fairly large piece of America’s economy (around 15%), can you imagine what would happen if they stopped producing garbage and produced only foods that were actually good for us? It would decimate the economy!
Look, it’s your body. It’s your health. You should be the one who controls it, but right now, if you’re eating all the processed crap called food then you’re not in control. They are and they really don’t care if you die or have severe health issues.
It’s up to you to decide how you will live the remainder of the life that God gave you. As for me? It’s a no-brainer.
