“Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people…”
– Ezekiel 12:2
Having been married for 38 years I can reflect on one common complaint that my wife has. It would fall under the “male search blindness” category. She will ask me to get something and I will dutifully head out in the general direction of what is required, but on the way the gremlins take over. I notice something out of place or a little this or that in need of attention, and soon I have forgotten the original quest and return to my place in my office or at the computer.
As you can foresee, my wife will at some point inquire as to the disposition of her request. There is usually a well-practiced (refer to the earlier mention of 38 years) pause as she waits for me to admit that I did not accomplish the original task. She knows the signs of my distraction, the picked-up items, the straightened shelf, the cleaned window, or dozens of other tell-tale signs that Jim has wandered past. All of these things take place on or near the route that would be taken to the original intended task. She knows what to look for.
We are easily distracted from what we know we should be attending to and God knows how child like we are in our understanding or rather our lack of it. His patience knows few limits unless we are deliberate in this thing called “sin,” and it is this that pains Him. Like little children wandering from our path because of the ease with which things attract our attention, we move away from the tried-and-true that He cleared for us and prepared for our good.
Our nation is quite similar in this regard, wandering away from the path that God ordained and the Founders committed us to. We are not guilt-free, but are often blind to what is happening. It is in this disability of blindness that the Enemy of our souls makes good his attack, and we stumble and fall because of our natural inclinations.
The constant need to check to see if we are on the path or if we have been seduced away from it is a requirement for us all. We need to realign ourselves because like the big ship with that little rudder, we can ever so slightly move away from the righteous path and find ourselves on the rocks.
The nation has been steered quite deliberately in the direction of the rocks, and many of us who knew the signs watched silently, amazed at what was happening. Unlike good watchmen on a wall, we did not alert the passengers and sound the alarm to the helmsmen to secure a change of direction away from danger and back to the course charted for our futures. We have enemies, and we opened the doors to their entrance. We have traitors, and we allowed them free reign in what they did and were silent.
Today we see what has happened and we are afraid and curse our own stupidity. But unless we repent as individuals and then corporately as a nation, why should God come to our aid? Is our demise as a democratic republic just another testimony to the iniquity of mankind?
We know that judgement is coming – or is it already here? Time for the warriors to get on their knees and seek the wisdom, strength and understanding that only God can give. That is where our power is, and from there we can view eternal victory.
