Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to address Congress tomorrow in “the most important speech of his career” which American media is hyping as having already “jeopardized relations between Israel and the United States.”
Why does inviting the leader of one of our closest allied nations to speak to Congress spark such a controversy? Because he’s about to tell Obama what he doesn’t want to hear–that employing the honor system with a nuclear Iran won’t keep the world safe.
So Obama has refused to attend, and refused to meet with Netanyahu at all on his visit. Joe Biden and John Kerry both quickly came up with other plans to avoid the speech, and several congressional Democrats say they’ll sit out the address because it’s an “affront to the President.” For national security and international interests pale in comparison to their main duty: protecting Obama’s ego.
