The White House seems to have a talent for aligning itself with the wrong side. The most recent such error concerns one Gulmurod Khalimov, commander of Tajikistan’s special-purpose police called OMON. Although the wrong turn started during the Bush years, it’s been compounded by Mr. Obama.
OMON’s mission, says Reuters, is to combat “criminals and militants.”
Unfortunately, in a video released last week to social media, Khalimov admits he has himself become a criminal and militant, by joining ISIS.
CNN reports that the State Department admitted Khalimov had been trained on U.S. soil:
“‘From 2003-2014 Colonel Khalimov participated in five counterterrorism training courses in the United States and in Tajikistan, through the Department of State’s Diplomatic Security/Anti-Terrorism Assistance program,’ said spokeswoman Pooja Jhunjhunwala.”
FortressAmerica reveals that “One U.S. State Department cable in the Wikileaks trove, flagged by Eurasia expert Joshua Kucera, notes that Khalimov’s group was even allowed to run a security drill in 2009 at the U.S. embassy in Tajikistan.”
In the video, Khalimov says he also received elite training from Russian “spetsnaz” forces in Moscow.
Tajikistan was the beneficiary of a quantity of “bullet-proof vests, special helmets, masks, binoculars and other equipment, in a 2013 “handover from our embassy,” according to the English version of Asia-Plus. Our embassy also provided Tajik border guards with a substantial amount of equipment “for securing the Tajik border from external threats,” said one of the embassy’s own press releases:
“The United States Embassy in Dushanbe, Export Control and Related Border Security program (EXBS) and Office of Military Cooperation (OMC) provided twenty-two All -Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s), thirty-three light trucks and additional tactical equipment to the Government of Tajikistan.” We even financed a border guards’ training center. In March of 2014, we built them a communications center:
“U.S. Ambassador Susan Elliott attended the handover ceremony for the new Tajikistan National Security Forces Communications Center at the Border Guards Communications Battalion today. The $3.6 million facility was constructed with funds from the U.S. Embassy.”
Would that our government invested the same interest in our own border.
Just this year, the embassy has donated heavy equipment in January, including “an excavator valued at $112,000 and “a tractor/backhoe valued at $44,900; and in May more “irrigation machinery.” The purpose was “to support implementation of irrigation water sector reform in Tajikistan.”
For some reason, we’ve taken a special interest in Tajikistan: we’ve trained their law enforcement officers, given them medical supplies, renovated a school. And, of course, we’ve set up a visa program for some 500 Tajiks to come to America annually, under the “Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.
There’s only 528 from Tajikistan, for this year, but a total of 50,000 permanent resident visas are given annually to “persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.” The breakdown by country is here.
In spite of our largesse to his former country, which is 90 percent Muslim, Colonel Khalimov didn’t speak kindly of America, in his video. Here are some choice excerpts, from CNN:
“Listen, you American pigs: I’ve been to America three times. I saw how you train soldiers to kill Muslims,” he says in Russian. “You taught your soldiers how to surround and attack, in order to exterminate Islam and Muslims.”
Then, in the most chilling part of the 10-minute video, he looks directly into the camera and says, “God willing, we will find your towns, we will come to your homes, and we will kill you.”
“He then demonstrates his dexterity with a sniper rifle by blowing apart a tomato from a distance of perhaps 25 yards. The scene is played in slow motion.”
Apparently, this is how he will deal with us, when he gets here.
CNN adds this concern: “The American program in which Khalimov participated is designed to teach tactics used by police and military units against terrorists by countries that cooperate with the United States on security matters. “But now experts are concerned that this defector has brought ISIS … an insider’s knowledge of the playbook the United States is using in the fight against ISIS.”
Once again, the Obama Administration’s strange adoration for things Islamic has backfired, along with his support for Egypt’s deposed Muslim Brotherhood president, his destruction of Libya, to the benefit of radical groups, and his championing of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s mission to subordinate our First Amendment to blasphemy laws.
