The more the terrorism threat worsens, the more President Obama ratchets up his campaign to minimalize the threat. I guess his role now is Islam’s publicist, doing damage control. Byron York put it this way, in The Washington Examiner:
“The administration no-shows [in Paris] were not a failure of optics, or a diplomatic misstep, but were instead the logical result of the president’s years-long effort to downgrade the threat of terrorism and move on to other things.”
During the National Prayer Breakfast, Obama enumerated some of the recent ravages of the Taliban, ISIS (ISIL) and Boko Haram:
“From a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris, we have seen violence and terror perpetrated by those who profess…to stand up for Islam, but in fact are betraying It.” We see ISIL, a brutal, vicious death cult … terrorizing … the Yezidis, subjecting women to rape as a weapon of war…. the murder of Muslims and Christians in Nigeria.”
With his customary genius for bizarre commentary in inappropriate settings, he added a spurious equivalency with Christianity:
“Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ.”
While most rightly saw this as a gratuitous insult to Christianity, it actually was damage control, or a wretched attempt at it. He chose to reach far back into history to come up with religious slaughter on a par with the latest bloodletting of Islam. The most recent was the Nazi slaughter of the Jews, but that would only remind the audience that radical Islam longs to pick up where Hitler left off.
Choosing the Crusades and the Inquisition was a failure that would’ve been even more obvious had he included some details in his enumeration of the recent acts of Radical Islam.
That “school in Pakistan” was attended by the children of army personnel. 132 were killed and 120 injured. It was a deliberate strike at the government, which the Taliban seeks to overthrow. Should they succeed, Pakistan’s sizable nuclear arsenal would fall into the hands of the Taliban. That wouldn’t be so bad, I guess: the White House doesn’t consider the Taliban a terrorist group anymore.
He minimized “the streets of Paris” incident in his recent Vox.com interview, during which he slyly converted the targeted kosher market murders to a random shooting in a deli, and likened international terrorism to local crime:
“When you’ve got a bunch of violent, vicious zealots who behead people, or randomly shoot a bunch of folks in a deli in Paris…. It is right and appropriate for us to be vigilant and aggressive in trying to deal with that—the same way a big city mayor’s got to cut the crime rate down if he wants that city to thrive.”
He mentioned ISIS’s “unspeakable acts of barbarism” and “the murder of Muslims and Christians in Nigeria.” But didn’t mention that ISIS is now in Libya and headed for Egypt, nor the fact that it’s Muslims that are doing all these things.
In Nigeria, Boko Haram, which translates to: “Western education is sin,” murdered 2,000 people in Baga, over a five day period last month and burned 16 towns to the ground. Newsweek said: “Their mission has been to establish an Islamic state in the country, which is … divided along religious lines between Christians and Muslims.”
Some 30,000 people were displaced. A thousand tried to escape to Chad by swimming Lake Chad; many drowned and many are stranded on Kangala Island. They’re “dying from lack of food, cold and malaria on the mosquito-infested island,” said a Baga resident, in touch with the survivors by cell phone. The government is pleading for UN assistance to rescue them.
Angelina Jolie, special envoy of U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said: “Each new crime committed by Boko Haram exceeds the last in brutality. This is a direct consequence of the environment of total impunity in which Boko Haram operates. Every time they get away with mass murder, rape and the enslavement of women and children, they are emboldened.”
She urged the United States and other nations to offer Nigeria help to “collect evidence and bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice.”—CNN
Michelle Obama did try to help, with a hashtag, as I recall.
The world has sat back and watched Boko Haram do whatever it wished since 2009; the Nigerian military is helpless to stop them.
And America, under the Great Minimalist, has done nothing, because, he says, his strategy for “extremism” is working; let’s just move on.
The whole Media-Left-Muslim axis is helping out with damage control.
The obnoxious civil rights attorney Shayan Elahi, debating Zuhdi Jasser, used the same term as Obama did, three days earlier at the Prayer breakfast: “Nobody is above any other religion; no one should get on their high horse…”
MSNBC’s admitted socialist, Lawrence O’Donnell said “Catholicism was once the most murderous force on the face of the Earth.”
The latest tactic is to point out that the average American has a very low risk of being killed by a terrorist. Last night, on the Kelly File, Jennice Fuentes, Chief of Staff to Rep Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), the amnesty advocate, indicated that heart attacks, guns and cancer are the major threats to Americans.
Obviously, we’re going to have these throwbacks in New York, before long, as ISIS leader Bhagdadi promised. Should the mightiest army on the planet really just “respond to refugee flows and natural disasters,” as Obama told West Point graduates, back in May, while the defenseless die by the thousands?
This is still the Home of the Brave, even if our president is not one of them. Forget not what the philosopher from Concord, Mass. said: “God will not have his work manifest by cowards.”
