As he watches his time in the White House dwindling away, President Barack Obama is making a “Hail Mary” attempt at achieving his anti-gun agenda. With his new Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, safely ensconced at the Justice Department, President Obama has the nation’s top cop once again setting the administration’s sights on American gun owners. According to news reports on Saturday, Justice Department officials are preparing to make their move to control private citizens exercising their constitutionally-protected right to purchase and own firearms for protection or sport.
This year, the federal government is hoping to saddle firearms owners with over a dozen additional gun laws, as well as updating the government’s list of rules the Justice Department has proposed to enact before the Obama administration is replaced with a new Commander in Chief. Critics claim the gun issue is another that Obama hopes will be part of his presidential legacy.
The new gun control measures are likely to include added control over sale and ownership of high-powered handguns and tougher gun storage requirements. Attorney General Lynch is expected to take up her predecessor’s – Attorney General Eric Holder’s – goal of disarming people who are suspected of being mentally unfit or have been perpetrators of domestic abuse.
The so-called gun safety activists and organizations have been pushing for such reforms for years but it was the Sandy Hook school shooting nearly three years ago in Newtown, Connecticut, that intensified their efforts to disarm American citizens. They claim that all they wish to do is take weapons away from “dangerous people” such as the mentally ill.
However, the gun rights advocates say the Obama administration and state governors wish to root out a number of prospective gun owners who are not a danger to society. Some of those who would suffer loss of their Second Amendment rights would be war veterans who are returning and who have been diagnosed as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
“The anti-gun hysteria and other crapola coming out of Washington could lead to massive civil disobedience throughout the United States,” John M. Snyder, a gun-rights lobbyist and former editor with the National Rifle Association, told Examiner. According to Snyder, the Obama administration may order Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to classify certain firearm models owned by millions of citizens as Title 2 guns under the Gun Control Act. “People then could obtain them only with great difficulty,” said Snyder, who also serves as a member of the advisory board of the American Federation of Police & Concerned Citizens.
Gun control activists are pushing for Obama to enforce policies they claim would keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill and those who are domestic abusers. Meanwhile, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), under the new Attorney General Loretta Lynch – someone who is accused of being an Eric Holder clone – is especially interested in stopping domestic abusers from owning guns.
“The issue of domestic abuse has nothing to do with school shootings, shopping mall attacks and movie theater slayings. This is left-wing politicians using a tragedy to grab more power and showboat for the voters,” said former police detective and shooting enthusiast Nancy Gerringer-Holmstead.
“This is a president [who] hates the Second Amendment, hates the constitutional right of Americans to own firearms,” NRA president Wayne LaPierre told Fox News Channel. “He can’t win at the ballot box, he can’t win in Congress, so he’s putting on his dictator’s hat and he’s going to do it by fiat. And we’re not going to let it happen.”
