On June 8, 2015, Breitbart’s Matthew Boyle writes:
Freshman GOP congresswoman Mimi Walters (R.-CA) has been on television pushing Obamatrade—appearing Monday on Morning Joe on MSNBC to do so—but her office admits publicly she hasn’t read the bill she wants to fast track through Congress.
Walters, whom Mika Brzezinski noted is the official “liaison” between House GOP freshmen and Speaker John Boehner’s leadership team, appeared on Morning Joe to push Obamatrade. Walters said:
Currently, what we are working on is Trade Promotion Authority. That issue we expect to take up by the end of the month. And what Trade Promotion Authority, known as TPA, is it’s really the framework of giving the president the opportunity to negotiate trade agreements with other countries. It’s very, very important that we pass this piece of legislation. It’s bipartisan. One in five jobs in America are created because of free trade, 95 percent of consumers are outside of the United States and if America doesn’t take the lead on trade then China is going to. I want America to take the lead and set the standards on trade.
But when Breitbart News asked Walters’ spokeswoman Christine Hardman later on Monday—after she blasted out video of the congresswoman’s appearance on Morning Joe, highlighting her support for Obamatrade—if Walters has been to the secret room inside the Capitol to read the text of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) that TPA would fast track, collectively known as Obamatrade, Hardman confirmed Walters has not been there to read it.
RINOTRACKER RESPONSE FROM CHRIS ADAMO:
Of all the legislative gymnastics of recent years, the “Trans-Pacific Partnership” (TPP) trade deal, and the associated effort to fast-track it with “Trade Promotion Authority” (TPA) are among the most convoluted and misrepresented we’ve seen. Thankfully, the fast-track ruse, by which Barack Obama could have used his stellar negotiating skills to strike a deal (Think Iranian Nuke talks), was shot down in the Congress on June 12.
Had the measure succeeded, Obama could not only have engaged in unilateral bargaining with a cadre of Pacific nations, but the constitutionally established Senate requirement of a two-thirds majority for ratification would have been nullified. Only a fifty-one vote majority would be needed to make it official, with no floor debate or amendments before that vote was taken. In short, the Congress of the United States was seeking to consign itself to virtual irrelevancy in the crucially important area of establishing international treaties.
Such abdication of constitutionally established governance would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. However, the Republican “Establishment,” led by House Speaker John Boehner (R.-OH) has once again reared its ugly head, and is doing the bidding of Barack Obama and the corporate entities that see everything in terms of the almighty dollar. In the process, “We the People” are being systematically shut out.
In his 1796 farewell address George Washington warned against the dangers of America involving itself in “entangling alliances.” Sadly, his wisdom has been largely ignored in recent years, with dire results. Consider one example the outrage perpetrated against the American people at the behest of dispassionate foreigners in just the last few weeks.
American beef producers were just dealt a major blow by the Congress, which struck down the requirement for “country of origin labeling” on June 10, at the behest of the World Trade Organization. Canadian and Mexican beef producers had protested to the WTO that if American consumers know where beef, pork and poultry is produced, an “unfair advantage” over foreign markets exists. Thus the WTO threatened America with sanctions including tariffs, at which point the Congress completely folded. In short, foreign powers deem it unnecessary for Americans to be aware where the food they eat is grown, and rather than contending for the well-being of Americans, the federal government surrendered.
So it should be understandable that Americans are in no mood to cede even more of their sovereignty, and ultimately their quality of life, to multinational cabals who share neither our interests nor our values. Yet the push has been on, and in high gear, among those Beltway insiders who can only see a potential for their favored special interests (and likely big-money donors) with no regard for the consequences faced by the people on Main Street.
The article referenced above was written a few days prior to the June 12 vote striking down “Fast Track.” It reveals just how insidious the effort has been. Considering the scope of TPP, it is insane for the Congress to consider debating and passing it without both a fair reading on Capitol Hill, and a thorough examination of its possible repercussions by the American people. Yet it has been kept secret, and as Representative Walters admits, despite being a staunch “supporter,” she has not even bothered to read it.
Thankfully, opposition to the bill prevailed, though even some of the reasoning of its opponents is inherently flawed, particularly on the left. For example, Democrats had responded to hardships inflicted on American workers as a result of previous trade agreements not by demanding that new treaties be instituted, but with their standard recourse of offering more government handouts to ease the plight of displaced workers. Ultimately, though the Democrats voted right on Friday, it was ultimately for the wrong reasons.
Americans should be immediately on guard for a predictable Tsunami of dirty tricks from both parties in the upcoming days and weeks, by which the “Ruling Class” hopes to get its way on globalized trade. Another back-door attempt to force TPA through the Congress is expected on Tuesday, June 16. Congressman Paul Ryan (R.-WI), who has proven himself to be the consummate “Establishment Republican,” angrily asserts that the battle will continue until the globalists and their big dollar lobbyists succeed. Meanwhile, the media is focusing almost entirely on this debacle as only a matter of personal concern for Obama and his reputation.
Diligence, we were told by Thomas Jefferson, is the price “We the People” must pay to secure and preserve our liberties and the integrity of our beloved America. Our continued diligence is crucial at this time to prevent such a drastic and ominous encroachment on this nation. And most of all, those in public office who would compromise the “firewalls” painstakingly established to protect and secure us, must be identified and replaced at the earliest opportunity.
